Congressman William Hill Boner read George Washington’s Farewell Address on the House floor an annual tradition for nearly 50 years for the last time! The practice began during a joint session of Congress on February 22, 1862.
Until the late 1960’s, it was common for high school students to take 3 separate courses in Civic and government. But Civics classes were slashed as curriculum narrowed over the ensuing decades.
