I remember going to a conference after Iraq War #1 and he was the keynote speaker! At lunch sitting next to the meeting sponsor I asked how much they paid him to speak. I was told 60K plus the use of a private jet although if they wanted him to wear his uniform (he was retired) it would be another 10 Large, Frankly surprised that the military would allow him to do that!
Stormin’ Norman who ran the Iraq war saw Powell as just another political General as opposed to himself who advanced thru the ranks on his military accomplishments alone. They say that Powell was perfect for the times as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs but in the end a let down as Secretary of State for not pushing back on the 3 idiot amigo’s Cheney, Rumsfeld and Bush #2. Perhaps if he had these guys would have been forced to implement a smarter military strategy. Will never know!
