In 1973, 55 year old Bobby Riggs faced 30 year old Billie Jean King for a winner take all $100,000 tennis match. Riggs came into the match the overwhelming favorite having already whipped the court with Margaret Court’s ass previously. Riggs was a known as an avid gambler and there is some suspicion that he may have bet against himself. At the time it was the most watched sporting event on TV.
This of course begs the question of why there was only one battle when certainly the #1 ranked man and woman tennis players could have faced each other to really answer the question of which sex was the best. However at the same time the women liberations movement was pushing the ERA amendment with the hope of equal pay and a lady tennis player being massacred on the tennis court would have undercut this effort significantly!
And that is all I’m going to say about that.
