ELECTORAL COLLEGE

A RECENT EDITORIAL IN THE NY TIMES CALLED FOR THE POPULAR ELECTION OF PRESIDENTS. NO SURPRISE GIVEN THAT THE LAST 2 OUT OF 3 PRESIDENTS DID NOT RECEIVE THE POPULAR VOTE. THE FACT THAT BOTH WERE REPUBLICAN ONLY ADD’S FUEL TO THIS FIRE!
BEYOND THE OBVIOUS FACT THAT HAD THESE ELECTIONS BEEN DECIDED BY THE POPULAR VOTE THE DEMOCRATS WOULD HAVE BEEN 3 FOR 3 INSTEAD OF 1 FOR 3, THERE WAS NO DISCUSSION OF THE DISADVANTAGES OF A POPULAR VOTE.
FOR EXAMPLE IS IT POSSIBLE TEN POLITICAL PARTIES WOULD RUN FOR THE PRESIDENCY? IF SO WHAT HAPPENS IF ONE CANDIDATE GETS 9% OF THE VOTE, EIGHT CANDIDATES GET 10% OF THIS VOTE AND THE WINNER GETS 11% OF THE VOTE….WHY IS THIS A BETTER OUTCOME FOR AMERICA?
MORE IMPORTANTLY WHY COULDN’T THIS HAPPEN? VERY EASY TO GO AFTER THE IMPERFECT ELECTORAL COLLEGE BUT WHY IS THE POPULAR VOTE MORE PERFECT GIVEN THE ABOVE?
